Why TimeGap exists

Most people who need a time difference need it in the middle of doing something else: arranging a call with a client abroad, working out when family will be awake, checking whether a deadline in another country has already passed. The answer should take three seconds and no sign-up.

That is the whole design brief. The calculator is the first thing on the page, it works without an account, and it runs in your browser rather than on a server — which is also why it is fast and why we never see what you compare.

How the times are calculated

Every result comes from the IANA time zone database via your browser’s own internationalisation engine. We never store a fixed offset for a country, because offsets move: daylight saving shifts them twice a year in much of the world, on different dates in each hemisphere, and governments change the rules outright from time to time.

Countries that span several zones — the United States, Brazil, Mexico, Canada, Australia, Russia and others — are labelled as such on their pages, with the zone being used stated openly, so you can switch to a specific city when it matters.
